Living in the OKC metro means dealing with some of the most unpredictable weather in the country. From softball-sized hail in Moore to straight-line winds tearing through Edmond, our roofs take a beating. As local roofers serving the OKC metro, we see the same problems pop up time and again.

Here's the reality: most homeowners don't realize they have roof damage until it's too late. That small leak in your Nichols Hills home? It started months ago with hail damage you never noticed. The missing shingles after last week's windstorm in Yukon? That's just the beginning.

Hail Damage: Oklahoma's Public Enemy Number One

Oklahoma sees over 100 hail events every year, and the OKC metro gets hit hard. March through June is peak season, but we've seen damaging hail as late as October and as early as February.

Hail damage isn't always obvious. Sure, if you get golf ball-sized hail like we saw in Norman back in 2019, you'll know it. But even quarter-sized hail can knock granules off your shingles, exposing the asphalt underneath. Those exposed spots become weak points where water infiltrates and freeze-thaw cycles create bigger problems.

The tricky part? Hail damage signs aren't always visible from the ground. I've climbed onto roofs in Bethany where homeowners swore they had no damage, only to find hundreds of hail strikes across every shingle. That's why we offer free inspections – because you can't protect what you can't see.

Here's what we look for: granule loss, exposed mat, cracked or split shingles, and damaged gutters or downspouts. Your air conditioning unit outside is a good indicator too. If the top of your AC unit has dents, your roof probably does too.

Wind Damage: More Than Just Missing Shingles

Oklahoma wind doesn't mess around. We regularly see sustained winds over 40 mph, with gusts hitting 70+ during severe storms. The Oklahoma City area sits right in the path of those notorious squall lines that roll through each spring.

Wind damage goes beyond the obvious missing shingles. Uplift damage happens when wind gets underneath shingle edges and breaks the seal. You won't see this from the ground, but it creates entry points for water. I've seen entire sections of roof decking exposed after strong winds in Mustang, with homeowners having no idea the damage existed until the next rain.

Flashing around chimneys, vents, and roof penetrations takes a beating from wind too. That metal flashing might look fine from your driveway, but up close we often find loose edges, gaps, or complete separation from the roof surface.

The reality is this: if your neighbors filed insurance claims after a storm, you probably should too. Wind doesn't pick and choose which houses to hit.

Poor Installation and Maintenance Issues

Not all roofing problems come from Mother Nature. We've seen plenty of issues caused by poor workmanship or deferred maintenance across the metro area.

Improper installation is everywhere. I've found nails driven at wrong angles, inadequate flashing around penetrations, and shingles installed backwards (yes, that's a real thing). These problems might not show up immediately, but Oklahoma's extreme weather exposes them quickly.

Clogged gutters are another big issue, especially in areas like Deer Creek with lots of mature trees. When gutters can't drain properly, water backs up under shingles and into your home. Ice dams aren't common here, but we do get occasional freezing rain that creates similar problems.

Ventilation problems plague many older homes in established neighborhoods like Heritage Hills or Crown Heights. Without proper attic ventilation, heat builds up in summer and moisture accumulates in winter. Both create conditions that deteriorate roofing materials from the inside out.

When to File an Insurance Claim

Truth is, most homeowners wait too long to inspect their roof after storms. Oklahoma insurance law gives you up to 24 months to file a claim for wind and hail damage, but waiting doesn't help anyone.

If you've had any significant weather event – and living in the OKC metro, that's probably every few months – get your roof inspected. The National Weather Service in Norman issues severe weather warnings regularly, and each one is a potential claim event.

Here's something important: filing a roof insurance claim in Oklahoma requires documentation and expertise. Insurance adjusters work fast, and they're looking for reasons to minimize payouts. Having a local contractor who understands Oklahoma weather patterns and insurance requirements makes a huge difference.

Don't wait for leaks to file a claim. Water damage is expensive and often not covered if it results from neglecting necessary roof repairs.

Get Ahead of Problems Before They Get Expensive

The best way to handle roofing problems is catching them early. We offer free roof inspections throughout the Edmond and OKC area because we know most damage goes unnoticed until it becomes a bigger problem.

A professional inspection covers everything your insurance adjuster will look for, plus problems that might not be claim-worthy but need attention. We'll check flashing, gutters, ventilation, and every square inch of your roof surface.
